CCPC ALERTS CONSUMERS IN ZAMBIA ON RECALL OF CERTAIN LAND ROVER DEFENDER, DISCOVERY AND RANGE ROVER VEHICLES OVER POTENTIAL AIRBAG CONCERNS
2026-08-21
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is alerting consumers in Zambia to a global recall affecting certain Land Rover Defender, Discovery and Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) from model years 2020 to 2026.
The alert follows information received by CCPC from the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (CCCC) regarding a recall initiated by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) due to a safety issue. The concern involves the connection to the driver's airbag at the clockspring, which may experience fretting corrosion over time. This can lead to an increased resistance in the driver's airbag circuit, potentially resulting in the airbag failing to deploy properly when required.
According to information provided by CCCC, the recall affects 250,857 vehicles globally and has been implemented in countries including South Africa and the United States of America.
CCCC has further confirmed to CCPC that 11 vehicles covered by the recall were imported into Zambia.
The recall covers the following vehicle models and production periods:
Vehicle Model Production Period Units Affected Globally
1. 2022-2026 Land Rover Range Rover- 8 July 2021 – 3 June 2026 69,685
2. 2021-2026 - Land Rover Discovery -14 September 2020 – 4 June 2026 83,620
3. 2020-2026 _ Land Rover Defender, 16 October 2019 – 28 May 2026 97,552
CCPC is therefore urging owners of the affected models to visit an authorised Jaguar Land Rover dealership or local importer/distributor where a proactive lubricant will be applied to the connector terminals at no cost.
CCPC engaged some Jaguar Land Rover importers and distributors operating in Zambia to facilitate the identification of affected vehicles and ensure that consumers receive the necessary information and appropriate remedial action.
CCPC reminds consumers that product recalls are an important consumer protection measure aimed at addressing identified safety risks and preventing potential harm. Consumers are therefore encouraged to take this recall notice seriously and respond promptly.
Those who require further information or encounter challenges in accessing the recall remedy are encouraged to contact CCPC through its official communication channels.
CCPC will continue to work with CCCC and other relevant stakeholders to monitor the implementation of the recall in Zambia and facilitate coordinated regulatory intervention where necessary.
